Today’s South China Morning Post carries a warning from the Consulate to U.S. citizens in Hong Kong. Is it increased terrorist activity and threats? Is it an onrushing typhoon? Is it a new wave of pick pockets? No! It’s the WTO Conference.
If you are planning on visiting Hong Kong between Dec. 12 and 19, I would recommend you pick another destination. Wan Chai District will basically be closed to even foot traffic. Scheduled protest marches will be moving along many of the main streets. Unscheduled protest marches are expected to pop up in places like the U.S. Consulate where the evil capitalists have their Hong Kong Headquarters. Maybe they’ll target the HSBC headquarters, too. We’ll know about it when it happens. My wife, Pam, has suspended operations at her office and plans to have everyone work from home. Many others are doing the same.
I did get a chuckle from the American press release when it recommended avoiding “large crowds.” If I tried to do that, I would need to stay in my flat. This is Hong Kong. Crowds are everywhere. It also urged Americans to register and/or update their contact information at the U.S. Consulate. That’s actually a good idea if you live here or plan to be here for the Conference.
I must admit, I do want to see the Korean farmers in action so I will most likely head towards one of the scheduled marches to see what chaos they can create here in stability obsessed Hong Kong. Hey, this might end up being fun.
