In the middle of the Central business district, on a Friday afternoon, I had three errands at three different banks and completed all three in under an hour.
Hong Kong is a wired city. There are ATMs on almost every corner. Not only is it wired, the banks are very efficient. Do you want foreign currency? No problem. They have a stock of most Asian currencies plus US Dollars, Pound Sterling, and Euros at very honest exchange rates. Even the neighborhood banks carry Yuan, Pounds, Euros and US Dollars for exchange. One caveat is to always carry your passport when visiting a bank in case you need to provide identification.
Whatever you might want to do, you can get it done, efficiently and relatively cheaply. What is even more shocking is that most tellers can take care of all but the most complicated transactions.
So just bring your ATM card and your credit card and forget about traveler’s checks or carrying large amounts of your home currency in cash. Hong Kong makes it easy to get currency and and even easier to spend it.
