More To Do Than Ride the Peak Tram – Performances

This last Sunday, my wife Pam and I attended the Cirque de Soleil presentation of “Quidam.” It was awesome.

On the bus ride home, I got to thinking about how the Hong Kong entertainment scene has changed in the 13+ years I’ve been here. The Pavarotti farewell tour will be here December 2nd. The Broadway production “Rent” is due in January. Holiday On Ice will present its show entitled “Hollywood” at Christmas time. A tennis tournament featuring many of the top ranked women players will be held in January. It’s hard to keep up with everything going on.

25 years ago, when I first started visiting Hong Kong, very few of these attractions would have come to Hong Kong. There was little for visitors to do except shop, eat, and visit the Peak. Now with new and improved venues and the realization that the residents of Hong Kong will pay to see world-class entertainment the scene has changed.

The best sources of entertainment information, available locally, are the Thursday edition of the South China Morning Post and the weeky English language HK Magazine, free at most bars and restaurants. You can access these publications at www.scmp.com and www.hk-weekend.com before you arrive. This is a good idea as many events sell out well in advance.

I’ve just scratched the surface, here. In subsequent entries, I’ll cover night life (I’m not a clubber, myself, so I’ll need help) sports events, the music scene, local theater, art galleries, museums – basically everything except shopping and dining which are covered in great detail elsewhere on the internet.

Some of you have offered to write restaurant reviews which I would welcome. If I personally discover a fine restaurant, I’ll talk about it but I’m not a gourmet. I tend to value what I like.
